Hampton, VA (January 5, 2026) – A deadly crash occurred in the early hours of January 5 inside the eastbound Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, leaving one person dead and another injured. Virginia State Police are investigating the two-vehicle collision, which took place shortly before 2:40 a.m. on Interstate 64.
According to officials, a gray Nissan Altima became disabled inside the tunnel after suffering a blown tire. As the vehicle remained stopped, it was struck at high speed by a red Acura MDX. The force of the impact caused the driver of the Altima to be ejected from the vehicle.
Emergency responders arrived quickly, but the driver of the Altima was pronounced dead at the scene. Their identity has not been released as authorities work to notify the next of kin. The driver of the Acura sustained injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The extent of their injuries has not been disclosed.
The crash occurred on January 5 and led to significant delays inside the tunnel as emergency crews worked to investigate and clear the scene. All lanes were eventually reopened once officials completed on-site procedures.
The cause of the crash is under active investigation by the Virginia State Police. They are examining vehicle conditions, speed, and other contributing factors.
