Johnson, MO (January 6, 2026) – Emergency crews responded early on Monday morning to a serious two-vehicle collision that left both drivers injured and vehicles heavily damaged. The crash occurred on MO 23, just south of Route Y in Johnson County, at approximately 6:11 a.m.
Emergency responders from Knob Noster Fire and Rescue were quick to the scene, providing urgent care to the injured parties. The crash involved a 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe traveling southbound and a 2010 Kenworth truck traveling northbound. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the collision happened when the Hyundai crossed the center line. Both drivers attempted to swerve toward the center of the roadway, but the vehicles collided front-to-front.
As a result of the impact, the Kenworth veered off the left side of the road and struck an embankment, while the Hyundai came to rest in the northbound lane. The 54-year-old female driver of the Hyundai, from Windsor, sustained serious injuries and was transported by Johnson County Ambulance District (JCAD) to Research Medical Center. The 32-year-old male driver of the Kenworth, a resident of Knob Noster, suffered minor injuries and reportedly sought his own medical treatment.
Both vehicles were declared totaled and removed from the scene by Don’s Truck Towing. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Department assisted at the scene, and the crash remains under investigation by Troop A of the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
Our thoughts are with those injured in this crash, and we extend heartfelt wishes for a swift and full recovery.
Head-On Collisions in Missouri
Head-on crashes are among the most dangerous types of traffic incidents, often resulting in severe injuries or fatalities. Monday’s serious crash near Route Y serves as a troubling reminder of how quickly a routine drive can turn dangerous. When a vehicle crosses the centerline, especially on two-lane highways like MO 23 in rural Johnson County, there is often little time for the other driver to react safely, making collisions more likely despite last-second evasive maneuvers.
In this case, the combination of early morning hours, the rural setting, and the actions of both drivers swerving toward the center led to a direct impact between the two vehicles. Although both individuals were wearing seat belts, the collision caused serious harm, particularly to the driver of the Hyundai, who required immediate hospital care at a trauma facility.
This incident also highlights the essential role that coordinated emergency response plays in rural crash outcomes. Knob Noster Fire and Rescue and JCAD worked quickly to assess and transport victims, ensuring critical medical attention was administered without delay.
For crash victims in Missouri, the aftermath can be overwhelming. From physical recovery to managing insurance claims and long-term care needs, support is often necessary to navigate the complexities that follow. Victims of head-on crashes may face long rehabilitation periods and deserve access to resources that can help them rebuild.
Local roads like MO 23 demand extra caution, especially during early morning hours or in low-visibility conditions. Drivers are urged to remain alert and stay within their lanes at all times to reduce the risk of head-on collisions.
