Immokalee, FL (January 11, 2026) – A bicyclist lost his life following a hit-and-run crash late on Friday night on State Road 29 near Hancock Street in Immokalee, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The collision occurred on January 9 at approximately 10:55 p.m. along the westbound lanes of State Road 29. Investigators reported that a man riding a bicycle was traveling south and attempting to cross the roadway when he was struck by a Chevrolet Tahoe traveling westbound. The impact caused fatal injuries to the bicyclist.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and provided aid before the victim was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead on January 10. The bicyclist’s identity has not yet been released as officials await positive identification and notification of next of kin.
Authorities identified the driver as 23-year-old Silvestre Jeconias Mejia Velasquez of Immokalee. According to investigators, the driver was not injured in the crash. After the collision, the Tahoe was left disabled on the roadway, and the driver fled the scene on foot instead of remaining to render aid or contact authorities.
Following an investigation, Mejia Velasquez was located and arrested. He has been charged in connection with leaving the scene of a crash involving death and was booked into the Collier County Jail. The crash remains under active investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.
