Costa Mesa, CA (January 12, 2026) – A fatal traffic collision involving a wrong-way driver occurred late Sunday night on the northbound side of State Route 55, just beneath the SR-73 overpass in Costa Mesa. The California Highway Patrol reported that the crash took place at approximately 10:35 p.m. on January 11.
A white Range Rover traveling in the wrong direction collided with at least two other vehicles before initially fleeing the scene. The driver of the Range Rover reportedly returned to the crash site shortly after the incident. At least one person was pronounced dead as a result of the collision. The identities of those involved have not yet been released, pending family notification.
First responders arrived swiftly to secure the scene and render aid to the injured. Additional victims were assessed at the scene, though the extent of other injuries has not been confirmed by authorities.
The area beneath SR-73 was temporarily closed as investigators documented the scene and worked to determine what led to the wrong-way driving. CHP officers are continuing their investigation and have not released further details about potential charges or contributing factors.
