According to Auburn Police, the crash occurred on April 27 in the Lea Hill area along 104th Avenue Southeast. Authorities say a 21-year-old driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed head-on into a tree.
The 2-year-old victim suffered severe blunt force injuries to the head and neck and was later pronounced dead. An 8-year-old girl sustained critical injuries and remains under medical care.
Officials confirmed that the driver was also injured and hospitalized. Police say her blood alcohol level was well over the legal limit at the time of the crash. Upon her release from the hospital, she is expected to be booked on charges including vehicular homicide and vehicular assault.
The roadway was closed for several hours following the crash as investigators processed the scene.
The incident remains under investigation.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family during this incredibly difficult time.
Why Are DUI Crashes Especially Dangerous for Passengers?
Driving under the influence significantly increases the risk of severe or fatal crashes, particularly for passengers inside the vehicle. Alcohol impairs judgment, reaction time, and coordination, making it much more difficult for a driver to maintain control or respond to hazards.
In many DUI crashes, vehicles may leave the roadway or collide with fixed objects such as trees or poles. These types of impacts can be especially severe because they often occur at full speed without any attempt to brake or avoid the obstacle.
Young passengers are particularly vulnerable due to their smaller size and reliance on proper restraints for protection. Ensuring that drivers are sober and that all occupants are properly secured can help reduce the risk of tragic outcomes in these preventable incidents.
