Castroville, CA (January 13, 2026) – A tragic head-on collision on Highway 1 north of Hwy 183 on January 12 resulted in the death of 22-year-old Pearl Chavez of Marina and left another driver seriously injured, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred at approximately 6:16 a.m. when a southbound gray Acura, driven by a man, collided head-on with a red Volkswagen heading northbound. The impact left the Acura blocking southbound lanes, while the Volkswagen came to rest along the right shoulder of the roadway.
Both drivers sustained major injuries and were transported to the hospital. Despite emergency medical efforts, the driver of the Volkswagen, later identified as Chavez by the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, succumbed to her injuries.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and it is not yet known whether impairment played a role. Traffic in the area was impacted for roughly two hours as crews cleared the scene, reopening the highway around 8:17 a.m.
