Houston, TX (January 13, 2026) – A deadly crash late Monday night on the Katy Freeway is under active investigation after a tow truck struck a disabled vehicle, killing its driver.
According to Houston police, the collision occurred just before midnight in the westbound lanes of the Katy Freeway near Studemont St. Investigators say a Toyota Corolla had broken down in an active lane of traffic and was stationary with its hazard lights activated when it was rear-ended by a westbound tow truck en route to a separate service call.
Tragically, the driver of the disabled Corolla was pronounced dead at the scene despite efforts from bystanders to perform CPR before emergency crews arrived. Authorities confirmed that the tow truck driver and their passenger were not injured and remained at the scene during the investigation.
Houston Police Department personnel reported that the tow truck driver was evaluated for impairment and showed no signs of being under the influence at the time of the crash. Whether any charges will be filed remains pending as the case is reviewed by the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
The crash led to a full closure of the westbound lanes on the Katy Freeway overnight. Crews worked throughout the early morning hours, with all lanes reopening just after 5:00 a.m. Tuesday.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the driver who lost their life in this tragic incident.
