Rio Oso, CA (January 13, 2026) – A serious two-vehicle collision left at least one person with major injuries early on January 12 along northbound State Route 70 near Kempton Rd in the Rio Oso area. The crash occurred at approximately 5:52 a.m. and involved a white Ford Fusion and a gray Toyota Prius, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Preliminary reports indicate that the force of the impact sent both vehicles off the highway—one coming to rest in a nearby field and the other landing in a ditch. Debris was scattered across the roadway, and at least one male individual was found lying on the ground by early responders or a passing motorist. Emergency medical personnel transported at least one seriously injured person for further care, though the total number of those hurt has not yet been confirmed.
Responding agencies, including CHP and local fire crews, arrived quickly to assist with rescue efforts and to secure the scene. Investigators noted that a stop sign on the east side of SR-70 at the intersection appeared to be down, and Caltrans was notified to address the issue as part of the traffic control assessment.
Traffic along northbound SR-70 was temporarily impacted while crews conducted cleanup, vehicle recovery, and investigative procedures. The collision remains under active investigation as officials continue reviewing the factors that may have contributed to the crash.
