St. Petersburg, FL (January 14, 2026) – A tragic crash on the Howard Frankland Bridge late Monday night claimed the life of a Georgia man and left three construction workers injured, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The collision occurred shortly before 10:00 p.m. on January 13, when a 37-year-old driver from Musella, Georgia, was heading southbound on the bridge. Authorities report that he failed to yield to construction workers and entered a closed lane within an active construction zone.
Once inside the restricted area, the Georgia man’s vehicle collided with a Ford F-550 operated by a 45-year-old Tampa man who was actively working in the zone. Two additional workers were aboard the Ford at the time of the impact.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and confirmed that the Georgia driver died as a result of the crash. The three construction workers suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation and treatment.
During the crash, debris from the collision also struck a Nissan Titan driven by an 18-year-old from Largo. Fortunately, that driver was not injured.
The Florida Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the crash and evaluate the sequence of events that led to the fatal incident. Traffic on the bridge was affected for several hours overnight as crews worked to clear the scene and assess damage within the active construction area.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the man who lost his life and send our best wishes to the injured workers for a full and speedy recovery.
