Wichita Falls, TX (January 14, 2026) – A tragic incident unfolded Tuesday afternoon in Wichita Falls, resulting in the death of 70-year-old Mary Perez, who was fatally injured while attempting to pick up her grandchild outside Crockett Elementary.
According to statements from the Wichita Falls Police Department, Perez was walking between two vehicles in the school pickup line when both began to move forward. The driver of the trailing SUV reported that she attempted to stop as Perez crossed in front, but her foot slipped off the brake and hit the accelerator, causing her vehicle to lunge forward and trap Perez against the SUV in front.
Emergency medical personnel arrived quickly at the scene on the corner of Arthur St and Seymour Rd, where the incident occurred around 4 p.m. Perez was transported to a nearby hospital with critical injuries but was later pronounced deceased. Authorities confirmed she was attempting to cross the street to meet her grandchild at the time of the collision.
Other individuals involved in the crash, including the drivers of both vehicles, reportedly suffered only minor injuries. Law enforcement officers cordoned off the area to conduct a thorough investigation and gather witness statements. At this time, no charges have been announced, and officials have not indicated whether impairment or distraction played a role in the incident.
This heartbreaking event has deeply affected the Crockett Elementary community. Our thoughts are with the Perez family and all others impacted by this devastating loss.
