Lawrence, KS (January 15, 2026) – A three-vehicle crash along US-40 just west of Lawrence left one man injured on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.
The crash took place at approximately 1:24 p.m. near the intersection of US-40 and E 800 Rd, roughly a mile west of the K-10 junction in Douglas County. Authorities reported that the incident began when a 2014 Ford Focus, stopped in the eastbound lane to turn south onto E 800 Rd, was rear-ended by a 2016 Ford Focus.
Following the impact, the 2016 Ford Focus spun clockwise into the path of oncoming traffic, where it was then struck on the driver’s side by a 1998 Honda Accord traveling southbound.
The driver of the 2016 Ford Focus, identified as 57-year-old Paul A. Morgenroth of Lawrence, sustained injuries in the collision and was transported to Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka for treatment. Officials noted that Morgenroth was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
The two other drivers—14-year-old Brinnley H. Morris, operating the 2014 Ford Focus, and 58-year-old Timothy J. King, who was driving the Honda Accord—were unharmed. Both were confirmed to have been wearing seat belts, and no passengers were involved in any of the vehicles.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash. We extend our best wishes to Mr. Morgenroth and hope for his full recovery.
