San Diego County, CA (January 18, 2026) – A fatal collision prompted a Sig Alert and major traffic disruption Saturday afternoon on the northbound side of Interstate 5 near the Aliso Creek Rest Area.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash was reported around 2:30 p.m. on January 17. Emergency responders arrived to find a severe incident that required the closure of the two left northbound lanes. A Sig Alert was issued shortly before 3 p.m. due to the extent of the roadway blockage.
Traffic quickly backed up for several miles, reaching as far south as Oceanside near the SR-76 junction. Drivers in the area experienced significant delays for several hours as investigators and cleanup crews worked at the scene.
While officials have confirmed that at least one person died in the crash, the events leading up to the collision remain under investigation. No further details about the victim or any other involved parties have been released.
By 6 p.m., all lanes had reopened, and the Sig Alert was officially lifted.
