Port St. Lucie, FL (January 20, 2026) – A 71-year-old man from Longwood has died following a serious single-vehicle crash that occurred last Thursday, January 16, on Interstate 95 in Port St. Lucie, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The incident took place around 11:20 a.m. on I-95 northbound near mile marker 116, between the Southwest Becker Rd exit and the Southwest Gatlin Blvd/Tradition Parkway exit. The man was driving a 2026 GMC Acadia when, for unknown reasons, his vehicle veered off the roadway into the grass center median and struck a tree.
St. Lucie County Fire District responded to the scene after an OnStar crash alert was triggered from the SUV. Multiple drivers also reported the crash shortly afterward. When emergency personnel arrived, they found the driver alone in the vehicle and critically injured.
A trauma alert was initiated, and the man was transported by ground to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce. Despite efforts to save him, he was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
The crash prompted a temporary closure of all northbound lanes in the area as authorities worked to assess the scene. The Florida Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation into the cause of the crash.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the man who lost his life in this tragic accident.
