Cincinnati, OH (January 20, 2026) – A fatal collision early Tuesday morning led to the extended closure of westbound Interstate 74 near the I-75 interchange, following a serious two-vehicle crash that left one person dead and another severely injured, according to Cincinnati police and fire officials.
The crash occurred around 2:56 a.m. on January 19 near the 18.3-mile marker, close to the Beekman St and Colerain Ave exits. Emergency responders arrived to find both drivers trapped inside their respective vehicles. Firefighters worked quickly to extricate the individuals from the wreckage.
One person was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. The second victim was transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center with significant injuries, according to District Chief Todd Stegmuller. No additional identifying information has been released for the individuals involved.
Police immediately shut down the westbound lanes of I-74 to allow for emergency operations and investigation. Additional cruisers and Ohio Department of Transportation units were called to assist with blocking traffic and diverting vehicles away from the scene.
The Cincinnati Police Traffic Unit is leading the investigation and has not yet determined the cause of the crash. It remains unclear whether speed, impairment, or other factors contributed to the collision.
