San Mateo, CA (January 24, 2026) – A woman was fatally injured Friday morning after being struck by a vehicle at the intersection of South El Camino Real and 17th Avenue in San Mateo. The deadly collision occurred around 10:30 a.m. on January 23, according to local authorities.
Emergency responders arrived on scene shortly after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting a vehicle-versus-pedestrian crash. Paramedics provided critical care and transported the pedestrian to a nearby hospital. Despite emergency medical efforts, the woman was later pronounced dead. Her identity has not yet been released, pending notification of family.
According to San Mateo Police Department, the driver involved in the crash remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Early findings from the investigation indicate the vehicle had turned north from Bovet Road—which becomes 17th Avenue east of the intersection—and struck the pedestrian as she crossed in the north crosswalk on South El Camino Real.
Following the collision, authorities shut down lanes on El Camino Real and closed the westbound Highway 92 off-ramp to South El Camino Real for approximately three hours. Police worked to document the scene and gather evidence while maintaining a safe perimeter for emergency operations.
