Chico, CA (January 25, 2026) – Authorities in Butte County are investigating a fatal early-morning crash that occurred Saturday near the intersection of Dayton Rd and Owen Ln, just south of Chico. The incident was first reported at approximately 3:27 a.m., prompting a multi-agency response including California Highway Patrol, Butte County Fire, and the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.
According to dispatch records, the vehicle involved caught fire following the collision. Motorists passing by attempted to assist a male occupant, but the situation quickly escalated. Emergency responders arrived at the scene to find the vehicle off the roadway and into an orchard. One subject was reportedly out of the vehicle, and fire crews worked to control the flames.
Shortly after the incident, CHP confirmed the crash as a fatality and notified the coroner’s office. A white Nissan sedan may have been associated with the incident, though the exact circumstances remain under investigation. Evidence collection and towing services were coordinated through CHP, and additional units were dispatched to secure the area.
Officials have not yet released the identity of the deceased, pending family notification. It is also unclear if any other individuals were involved or injured.
