New Castle, DE (January 26, 2026) – A fatal pedestrian accident occurred on Friday evening in New Castle, resulting in the death of a 64-year-old man after he was struck while crossing South Dupont Highway.
The accident happened at approximately 6:10 p.m. on January 23 along South Dupont Highway, just south of Christiana Road. Delaware State Police reported that a Toyota Tundra was traveling southbound in the left center lane when a pedestrian entered the roadway from the Wawa located at 117 South Dupont Highway. The pedestrian was struck in the left center lane after crossing into the truck’s path.
The pedestrian, identified as 64-year-old David Wilmore of Middletown, was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators noted the man was crossing in a prohibited area where a median fence line was in place to discourage pedestrians from attempting to cross the highway.
The driver of the Toyota, a 45-year-old woman from New Castle, was not hurt in the collision. Police stated that she appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and was cited for driving under the influence following a DUI investigation.
South Dupont Highway’s left southbound lanes were closed for approximately four hours while authorities worked to investigate the accident and clear the scene.
