Newark, NJ (January 26, 2026) – An early morning house fire on January 26 left two residents and one firefighter injured and forced multiple families from their homes in Newark’s North Ward. The blaze was reported shortly before 1:45 a.m. on the first block of Wakeman Avenue.
According to public safety officials, fire crews arrived to find a residential structure engulfed in flames. Crews battled through harsh conditions, including freezing temperatures and nearly a foot of snow on the ground, to bring the fire under control by 3:09 a.m.
Two civilians were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the fire. A firefighter also suffered a burn to his inner thigh while working to contain the blaze. None of the injuries was reported as life-threatening.
Ten individuals, including eight adults and two children, were displaced as a result of the fire, which affected four families. Emergency services coordinated with local assistance programs to provide temporary shelter and support for those impacted.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation by Newark authorities.
