Fresno, CA (January 27, 2026) – A fatal crash involving a pedestrian was reported early Tuesday morning on the southbound side of State Route 99 just north of the Belmont Ave off-ramp, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The tragic incident began unfolding around 12:42 a.m. when multiple reports came in of a male individual running in and out of traffic lanes and standing between vehicles on the freeway. Witnesses, including a semi-truck driver, narrowly missed striking the man before a collision ultimately occurred.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly thereafter and confirmed the pedestrian had been fatally struck. Authorities immediately shut down multiple southbound lanes to conduct a thorough investigation and secure the area.
Tow services and Caltrans crews were called in to assist with freeway closures and the removal of vehicles involved. The on-ramp from Belmont Ave to southbound SR-99 was also closed as part of the traffic control effort.
The deceased individual has not yet been identified, and it is unknown why he was on the roadway at that hour. Officials continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the incident, including whether impairment or mental health factors may have played a role.
We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones of the victim during this difficult time.
