Bakersfield, CA (January 28, 2026) – A massive crash involving over a dozen vehicles—including multiple semis—occurred Tuesday morning on eastbound State Route 58 just east of Tower Line Rd, resulting in major injuries and a hazardous materials response.
The incident began around 8:00 a.m. and rapidly escalated, involving an estimated 20 or more vehicles including small passenger cars, work trucks, and several large commercial trucks, one of which was pulling an Amazon trailer. Officials described the crash as spanning a large stretch of the highway with multiple points of impact.
Emergency responders from CAL FIRE, Kern County Sheriff’s Office, and CHP rushed to the scene and worked extensively throughout the day. One person was reported to have sustained a major head injury and was briefly pinned inside their vehicle before being rescued and transported to a hospital. Others involved suffered varying degrees of injury, though the total number of injured has not yet been officially confirmed.
The crash led to the complete shutdown of eastbound SR-58 for several hours as heavy-duty tow trucks worked to clear wreckage, including a tanker with major damage. A diesel fuel spill of approximately 55 gallons was also reported, prompting a response from environmental health authorities.
Dense morning fog with visibility as low as 50 feet was noted as a contributing factor. Officials have not released full findings, but the investigation is ongoing as crews continue clearing the scene and assessing environmental impact.
Our thoughts are with the individuals injured in this crash, and we extend hopes for their recovery following this serious and complex incident.
