Steubenville, OH (January 29, 2026) – A devastating early-morning collision on Wednesday along U.S. 22 claimed the life of a Steubenville man after his SUV collided with a semi-truck and ignited in flames, according to reports from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The accident occurred shortly before 5:30 a.m. on the westbound side of US-22, just north of the split with State Route 7. Officials said a Freightliner commercial truck, which was hauling a trailer loaded with telephone poles, had pulled over to the berm to inspect its load. As the truck was stationary, it was struck from behind by a crossover SUV.
The force of the impact caused the SUV to catch fire, resulting in fatal injuries to the driver, later identified as 34-year-old John David Ruiz of Steubenville. First responders from the Steubenville Fire Department, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, and state troopers arrived quickly, but Ruiz was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident is under active investigation, with authorities working to determine all contributing factors. No other injuries were reported.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr. Ruiz during this incredibly difficult time.
