Why Single-Motorcycle Crashes Often Result in Fatal Injuries
Motorcycle crashes can be especially severe because riders lack the protective structure that surrounds occupants of passenger vehicles. When a motorcycle leaves the roadway, fixed objects such as trees, utility poles, or guardrails can present significant danger.
Loss of control can occur for several reasons, including roadway surface changes, speed adjustments, or unexpected obstacles. Even a brief deviation from the travel lane can lead to a serious outcome if the motorcycle enters a median or shoulder area.
Center medians with grass surfaces may appear forgiving, but uneven ground can destabilize a motorcycle quickly. Once control is lost, the risk of ejection increases. Impact with a stationary object often leads to catastrophic injuries due to the direct force involved and the limited protection available to the rider.
