Thermal, CA (February 20, 2026) – A crash involving a gray Honda and a Ford work van resulted in multiple injuries on Thursday evening at the intersection of SR-86 and 62nd Ave in Thermal. The collision occurred at approximately 5:35 p.m. and temporarily shut down both directions of traffic in the area.
According to reports from the California Highway Patrol, the crash happened when the Honda reportedly ran a red light and struck the work van. Emergency responders from CAL FIRE and AMR were dispatched shortly afterward and provided aid to the injured parties.
Three people were transported to Desert Regional Medical Center for treatment, including two teenagers with back injuries and their mother, who was also hurt. Emergency units worked quickly to reopen the roadway, which was cleared by around 6:49 p.m. Vehicle recovery services were requested, and one vehicle was later stored following the incident.

Why Minor Injury Crashes Still Require Full Emergency Response in Riverside County
Even crashes labeled as “minor injury” often involve multiple victims and complex response needs. In this case, several people, including teens, required hospital transport after the initial impact. That’s why agencies like CAL FIRE and AMR routinely respond with full support to ensure timely assessment and care.
When red-light violations lead to collisions, responders also focus on checking for hidden injuries that may not be obvious at the scene. Back pain and other trauma are common after side-impact crashes, particularly when seatbelts or airbags deploy.
Temporary lane closures are also standard during multi-party incidents. They allow medics space to work and ensure safe vehicle removal. These protocols help protect both crash victims and emergency teams in fast-moving highway environments like SR-86.
