What Makes a Crash “Major Injury” Under California CHP Classifications?
In California, collisions are classified by injury severity to help guide emergency response. A crash labeled as “1180 – Major Injury” typically involves significant harm that may include fractures, unconsciousness, or other trauma requiring advanced medical care.
This classification prompts a heightened response from fire crews, paramedics, and law enforcement. It may also lead to road closures, especially when a victim is trapped or when cleanup requires time and equipment. In rural areas like the SR-20 corridor, response times can be longer, making early classification especially important.
Major injury designations also help prioritize hospital transport and ensure proper coordination between agencies. These classifications are not just technical; they shape how quickly help arrives and how thoroughly the scene is managed.
