Why Stopped Vehicles on Highways Pose Serious Risks
Highways like I-10 carry fast-moving traffic at all hours, including overnight. When a vehicle stops along the shoulder, drivers in passing lanes may have limited time to react, especially in low-light conditions.
Even with hazard lights activated, stopped vehicles can be difficult to see at high speeds. Drivers who are distracted, fatigued, or impaired may fail to move over or slow down in time. That is why “Move Over” laws require motorists to change lanes or reduce speed when approaching vehicles stopped on the roadside.
Helping stranded motorists is often done out of goodwill, but it carries risk. Remaining alert and giving ample space to stopped vehicles can help prevent tragic highway collisions.
