Why Highway Closures Often Follow Serious Injury Crashes
Highway crashes on roads like I-79 frequently lead to temporary closures, especially when serious injuries are reported. When a patient requires air transport, additional space is needed for landing and takeoff, which can extend the shutdown time.
Closing lanes allows emergency crews to safely assist victims and remove damaged vehicles. Mile marker locations, such as MM 113, help responders quickly pinpoint the crash site along long stretches of interstate.
High-speed traffic increases the risk of secondary collisions if vehicles are not properly diverted. For that reason, roadway agencies may be called in to manage detours and monitor conditions. Once vehicles are cleared and debris is removed, highways are typically reopened as soon as it is safe for drivers to return.
