Risks and Dangers of Exiting a Vehicle on a High-Speed Highway
High-speed roadways like the New Jersey Turnpike present serious dangers for anyone outside a vehicle. Traffic often moves at highway speeds, and drivers may have little time to react to a person in the roadway, especially at night.
When someone exits a vehicle on a busy highway, visibility becomes a major concern. Headlights from oncoming traffic, limited shoulder space, and heavy vehicle flow can create extremely hazardous conditions. Even brief stops can increase the risk of secondary crashes as drivers attempt to swerve or brake suddenly.
Chain-reaction accidents are more likely in areas with multiple lanes and steady traffic volume. When one vehicle slows unexpectedly, others behind it may not have enough distance to stop safely. Staying inside a disabled vehicle when possible, activating hazard lights, and calling for roadside assistance are generally safer options on high-speed roads.
