Wonder Lake, IL (February 23, 2026) – Two people were taken to the hospital after a house fire caused significant damage and displaced residents on Saturday afternoon in Wonder Lake. The fire was reported around 4:25 p.m. on February 21 in the 2000 block of Winterberry Trl.
Emergency units responded after multiple 911 calls reported smoke and flames coming from the home. Crews arrived within minutes and found heavy fire coming from the attached garage of a two-story, single-family house. The resident told firefighters that everyone had already made it out safely.
Due to the extent of the fire, additional departments responded to assist. Firefighters used a large water stream to knock down most of the flames before moving inside to extinguish remaining hot spots. During the response, crews rescued a cat from inside the house.
Two people were injured and taken to the hospital in good condition. The home was declared uninhabitable, and a vehicle inside the garage was destroyed.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. We are thinking of those displaced and injured as they recover.
How Garage Fires Can Quickly Spread Through a Home
Fires that start in or involve an attached garage can spread rapidly into the main living area. Garages often store fuel, vehicles, and other flammable materials that can intensify flames. Once the fire reaches the attic or shared walls, it can move quickly throughout the structure.
Smoke can also travel fast through open doorways, vents, and ceiling spaces. Even if residents exit safely, heavy smoke and heat can cause severe structural damage in a short amount of time. Vehicles parked inside garages may add to the intensity of the fire.
Quick reporting and fast arrival times can help limit damage, but homes with attached garages face unique risks due to the materials commonly stored in those spaces.
