Fresno County, CA (April 24, 2026) – A 25-year-old woman died after a late-night crash involving a vehicle that entered the Friant-Kern Canal in Fresno County. The incident occurred around 11:25 p.m. on Thursday along Jensen Ave, just east of Navelencia Ave.
According to reports, the vehicle had been involved in reckless driving in a nearby dirt lot, creating heavy dust and reducing visibility. Authorities said the driver then mistakenly drove into the canal.
Two men inside the vehicle escaped after it entered the water. A female passenger in the rear seat was initially reported missing and was later found downstream by a rescue team.
She was pulled from the canal and given lifesaving care before being taken to a hospital, where she later died. The driver, identified as 22-year-old Alexander Alcocer, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they are provided.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
What Risks Are Linked to Vehicles Entering Canals or Waterways?
When a vehicle enters a canal or similar waterway, the situation can become life-threatening within moments. Water can quickly fill the vehicle, making it difficult for occupants to escape, especially for those seated in the rear.
Visibility issues, such as dust or darkness, can increase the risk of leaving the roadway. Once a vehicle enters the water, strong currents may carry it away from the point of entry.
Rescue efforts can be challenging due to limited access and changing water conditions. Even when people are pulled from the water, delayed rescue can lead to severe outcomes due to a lack of oxygen or other complications.
