What Can Cause Rear-End Crashes Involving Tractor-Trailers?
Rear-end crashes involving tractor-trailers can cause serious injuries because of the difference in size and weight between the vehicles. A smaller car may sustain substantial damage when it strikes the rear of a large commercial truck.
Following distance is one factor that can affect the risk of a rear-end collision. Drivers who leave more space between vehicles have additional time to slow or stop when traffic changes suddenly.
Visibility can also be a concern around large trucks. A tractor-trailer can block a driver’s view of traffic ahead, making it harder to recognize slowing vehicles or stopped traffic until there is less time to react. Road conditions, lighting, distraction, and vehicle speed may also be considered when examining how a rear-end collision occurred.
