How Winter Road Conditions Contribute to Highway Crashes
Winter weather can create hazardous driving conditions, especially on open highways. Snow, ice, and freezing temperatures reduce tire traction and make it harder to control a vehicle. Even a brief loss of control can cause a car to cross into oncoming traffic.
When vehicles collide head-on, the combined force of impact often leads to severe or fatal injuries. Rural highways may also have higher speed limits, which increases the risk during slick conditions.
Drivers can reduce the chance of a winter accident by slowing down, increasing following distance, and checking tire condition. Staying alert to changing road surfaces can help prevent vehicles from sliding or drifting into other lanes.
