Red Cloud, NE (February 23, 2026) – A 24-year-old Kenesaw firefighter was killed in a train crash on Thursday morning on Hwy 136 near Amboy, about four miles east of Red Cloud. The collision occurred around 9:30 a.m. on February 19.

Andrew Katzberg was identified as the victim. Reports indicate that a hay grinder struck an unloaded BNSF freight train. Katzberg died at the scene as a result of the impact.

Ten railcars were derailed during the crash. No injuries were reported among the train crew. Hwy 136 was closed between Red Cloud and Guide Rock following the collision and remained shut down until about 3 a.m. Friday before reopening to regular traffic.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.

We extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

How Train Collisions at Highway Crossings Can Lead to Severe Damage

Crashes involving trains and roadway equipment often occur at highway crossings where large farm machinery or commercial vehicles must cross active rail lines. These vehicles may move slowly, making it harder to clear the tracks before a train approaches.

Freight trains require long stopping distances, especially when traveling at higher speeds. Even an unloaded train can weigh thousands of tons, which increases the force of impact during a collision. When heavy equipment strikes a train, derailments can occur, leading to significant rail and cargo damage.

Road closures often follow these incidents while crews inspect tracks and remove damaged railcars. Proper crossing signals, clear visibility, and cautious driving around rail lines can help reduce the risk of serious train-related accidents.
