Rapid City, SD (February 23, 2026) – Three people were hurt in a four-vehicle crash on Sunday afternoon on Omaha St in Rapid City. The collision happened around 1:10 p.m. after two cars were seen racing eastbound.
Reports show a BMW and a Dodge were traveling at high speeds along Omaha St. Investigators say the BMW slammed into vehicles stopped at a red light, damaging three cars. The Dodge was not involved in the crash itself.
The driver and passenger in the BMW were taken to a local hospital. A passenger from one of the struck vehicles was also hospitalized. Authorities believe the BMW’s driver was under the influence of alcohol and marijuana. Charges are pending as the investigation continues.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
We send our best wishes to those injured as they receive medical care.
Street Racing Greatly Increases the Risk of Multi-Vehicle Accidents
Street racing on busy city roads can quickly lead to chain-reaction crashes. High speeds reduce reaction time and make it harder to stop for traffic lights or slowed vehicles ahead. When racers approach intersections, the risk of striking stopped cars rises sharply.
Multi-vehicle accidents often happen when one speeding vehicle hits cars waiting at a red light. The force of impact can push vehicles into each other, causing injuries to drivers and passengers who had no warning.
Driving under the influence further raises the danger by impairing judgment and coordination. Crowded roadways, traffic signals, and cross traffic make public streets especially unsafe for high-speed driving.
