What Risks Increase on Highway Exit Ramps?
Highway exit ramps can present unique hazards for drivers, especially at night. Reduced lighting, changing speed limits, and merging traffic patterns may increase the chance of a crash.
When a vehicle becomes disabled on a ramp, the risk can rise quickly. Drivers approaching from behind may have limited time to react, particularly if the stopped vehicle is in a travel lane. Even with hazard lights activated, visibility may be reduced due to curves or elevation changes.
Standing outside a disabled vehicle on a ramp can also be dangerous. Traffic continues to move at highway speeds, and space to maneuver is often limited. These factors can contribute to serious or fatal outcomes when collisions occur in these areas.
