Okeechobee County, FL (February 24, 2026) – A sheriff’s deputy was seriously injured on Monday evening after being struck by a vehicle while directing traffic in Okeechobee County. The incident occurred on February 23 at the intersection of US-441 and Wolf Rd.
Deputy Austin Rhodes was managing traffic due to a malfunctioning signal when a passenger vehicle entered the intersection and hit him. Officials said the impact threw him a significant distance down the roadway. Emergency units had to airlift Rhodes to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce, where he remains in stable condition as he receives treatment.
The crash happened during a separate law enforcement-related accident nearby that had already caused delays along US-441. The incident remains under review by authorities. We are thinking of the injured deputy as he continues his recovery.
