What Are the Risks Pedestrians Face on New Jersey Roadways at Night?
Pedestrian crashes in New Jersey occur most often during evening and nighttime hours, when visibility for both drivers and walkers drops significantly. Roads like Nixon Drive in Moorestown are not always equipped with sidewalks or dedicated pedestrian paths, which can leave walkers with little separation from moving traffic. Even on roads with a shoulder, a pedestrian walking near the travel lane faces real risk from passing vehicles.
Drivers traveling westbound in low-light conditions may struggle to see a person on the roadside in time to slow down or steer clear. Reaction time becomes especially limited when a pedestrian is not wearing reflective clothing or walking in a well-lit area. Burlington County roads that pass through residential and semi-rural stretches can be particularly hazardous for pedestrians after dark, when vehicle speeds remain high and lighting is limited.
