Lake Wales, FL (February 25, 2026) – One person died early on Wednesday morning, February 25, after a crash involving a semi-truck in Lake Wales. The collision occurred around 3:20 a.m. on State Road 60 West at West Lake Wales Road North.
According to deputies, a 2026 Freightliner semi-truck was traveling east on SR 60 when a 2022 Kia K5 sedan struck the rear of the truck for reasons that have not been released. Emergency units responded and found the driver of the Kia dead at the scene.
A passenger in the Kia was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. Authorities said the driver of the sedan was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, though the airbags did deploy.
The crash remains under investigation. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased victim.
Why Are Rear-End Crashes with Semi-Trucks So Dangerous?
Rear-end collisions involving semi-trucks often result in severe damage to smaller vehicles. The height and weight of a tractor-trailer can cause a significant impact on the front of a passenger car, especially at highway speeds.
Seat belt use can reduce the risk of fatal injuries in many crashes. While airbags provide added protection, they are designed to work together with seat belts. Without a seat belt, occupants may face a higher risk of serious harm.
Early morning hours can also affect visibility and reaction time. Reduced traffic does not always mean safer conditions, particularly when large commercial vehicles share the roadway.
