Why Nighttime Bicycle Crashes Can Be Especially Dangerous
Bicycle crashes that occur at night often present added risks. Reduced visibility can make it harder for drivers to see cyclists, especially on roads without strong lighting. Dark clothing and limited reflectors can further decrease visibility.
When a vehicle and a bicycle are traveling in the same direction, drivers may not notice a cyclist ahead until it is too late. Even a brief delay in reaction time can lead to a serious collision.
Cyclists can improve visibility by using front and rear lights and wearing reflective gear. Drivers can help reduce risk by slowing down, using headlights properly, and staying alert for bicycles sharing the road after dark.
