What Happens When a Pedestrian Is Struck on a Highway
Pedestrian crashes on highways often result in severe outcomes due to higher vehicle speeds and limited reaction time. Unlike city streets, highways are designed for uninterrupted traffic flow, and drivers may not expect pedestrians in travel lanes.
Visibility conditions also affect these incidents, especially at night. Headlights may not provide enough distance for drivers to stop safely when a person suddenly enters the roadway. Factors such as road lighting, clothing visibility, and traffic volume can influence how quickly drivers can react.
In these situations, the human body has little protection against the force of a moving vehicle. Even when drivers attempt to slow down or avoid impact, injuries are often severe due to the speed and direct exposure involved.
