The woman was taken to a local hospital in critical condition following the crash. On Thursday, February 26, the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office notified police that she had succumbed to her injuries.
The driver and his 31-year-old male passenger remained at the scene and were uninjured.
The crash remains under investigation. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased victim.
How Do Left-Turn Crashes Involving Pedestrians Occur?
Pedestrian crashes often happen during left turns at intersections. Drivers may focus on oncoming traffic and gaps in vehicles while preparing to turn, which can reduce attention to people crossing in front of them.
Marked crosswalks are designed to give pedestrians a clear path across the road. Even so, visibility, timing of signals, and driver awareness all affect safety at these crossings.
In urban areas, intersections can be busy with cars, buses, and foot traffic moving at the same time. The combination of turning vehicles and pedestrians in crosswalks increases the chance of a serious collision if either party misjudges timing or distance.
