Huntley, IL (February 27, 2026) – Two people suffered life-threatening injuries early on Thursday, February 26, in a crash that shut down part of Interstate 90 near Route 47.

The collision was reported around 4:30 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-90 just west of Route 47 near mile marker 46.25. Officials said a semi-tractor-trailer and a Chevrolet Malibu were involved. The sedan sustained heavy damage and came to rest off the roadway.

Emergency units had to perform minor extrication to remove the driver and passenger from the Chevrolet. Unfortunately, the latter was reported unresponsive at the scene. Both occupants were taken to Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital with serious to critical injuries.

A medical helicopter later flew one of the victims to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for further trauma care. The driver of the semi-truck was not injured. Westbound access from Route 47 to I-90 was closed for several hours during the response.

The crash remains under investigation. Our thoughts remain with those affected as they continue to receive care and recover from their injuries.

Why Do Highway Crashes Involving Semi-Trucks Often Cause Severe Injuries?

Collisions between passenger vehicles and semi-trucks can lead to major damage due to the size and weight difference. Smaller cars often absorb much of the impact, which increases the risk of critical injuries for occupants.

Early morning crashes may also involve reduced visibility or driver fatigue. At highway speeds, even a brief lapse in attention can result in a serious collision.

When heavy trucks are involved, additional concerns like fuel leaks may complicate the scene. Cleanup and investigation can take hours, especially when lanes or ramps must be closed for safety.
