Pedestrian Incidents on Interstates Present Severe Safety Risks
Pedestrian crashes on controlled-access highways such as I-55 are particularly dangerous due to high vehicle speeds and limited visibility, especially during overnight hours. Interstates are not designed for foot traffic, and drivers typically have little expectation of encountering pedestrians in travel lanes.
Secondary collisions are also a common risk following an initial crash on major highways. Sudden braking, lane changes, and reduced visibility caused by debris or stopped vehicles can contribute to additional incidents, as occurred in this case.
Crash investigators will generally evaluate roadway lighting, visibility conditions, traffic flow, and any potential contributing factors, including vehicle speed or impairment. Authorities may also review surveillance footage or witness statements to reconstruct the sequence of events.
Motorists traveling on high-speed roadways are reminded to remain alert for unexpected hazards, particularly in areas where emergency response activity is underway.
