Why Rear-End Motorcycle Crashes Can Be Especially Dangerous
Motorcycle crashes involving the rear of another vehicle often lead to severe injuries because riders have little physical protection. Unlike occupants inside passenger vehicles, motorcyclists are exposed and can be thrown from the bike during an impact.
Rear-end collisions may occur when traffic slows suddenly or when a rider accelerates while approaching another vehicle. Even a small misjudgment in distance can result in a high-impact crash, especially at higher speeds.
When a motorcyclist is ejected, the risk of serious head, chest, or spinal injuries increases. Helmets and protective riding gear can help reduce the severity of injuries, but they cannot eliminate the dangers associated with sudden impacts.
Road awareness, safe following distances, and consistent speed control are often key factors that influence how safely motorcycles interact with other vehicles on busy highways.
