Chatham Co., GA (March 2, 2026) – Three people were injured early Saturday morning, February 28, in a crash involving an ambulance at the intersection of Highway 204 and Gateway Boulevard.
The collision happened around 5:30 a.m. when a passenger vehicle struck the rear of an ambulance that was stopped in traffic. Officials confirmed the ambulance was not responding to a call at the time of the crash.
Both vehicles came to rest in front of the traffic light at the intersection. The occupants of the ambulance and the passenger vehicle were taken to Memorial Hospital and St. Joseph’s Hospital for treatment of reported injuries.
The roadway was temporarily closed while emergency units worked at the scene. The crash remains under investigation.
Our thoughts are with those injured as they continue to recover.
What Happens When an Emergency Vehicle Is Hit in Traffic?
Ambulances and other emergency vehicles can be involved in crashes even when they are not using lights or sirens. When stopped in traffic, they are subject to the same risks as other vehicles on the road.
Rear-end collisions often occur when a driver fails to notice slowing or stopped traffic ahead. Early morning hours can add challenges, such as reduced visibility or driver fatigue.
Because ambulances are larger and heavier than most passenger cars, the force of a rear impact can still cause injuries. The position of occupants inside both vehicles and whether seat belts were used can influence the severity of those injuries.
