Why Pedestrian Crashes Often Occur on Busy Roadways
Pedestrian crashes frequently happen on roads with steady traffic and multiple lanes. Drivers may have limited time to react when someone enters the roadway, especially in areas without marked crosswalks or traffic signals.
Lighting conditions, vehicle speed, and driver attention all influence the risk of a pedestrian crash. At night or during low-light conditions, pedestrians may be harder to see, particularly when wearing dark clothing.
Road design also affects pedestrian safety. Wide roads with higher speed limits can increase danger because vehicles require more distance to stop. Sidewalks, crosswalks, and pedestrian signals are features that help reduce these risks by creating clearer spaces for people to cross safely.
