How Center-Line Crashes Often Lead to Serious or Fatal Injuries
Collisions that happen when a vehicle crosses the center line can be especially severe. These crashes often involve a head-on impact, which places intense force on both drivers and passengers.
Two-lane highways like US routes can increase the risk of this type of accident. Without a physical barrier between directions of travel, even a brief drift into the opposite lane can result in a direct collision. Factors such as distraction, medical issues, fatigue, or road conditions may contribute to a vehicle crossing the line.
When larger vehicles are involved, the size and weight difference can make the outcome more serious for occupants of smaller vehicles. Safety features such as seat belts, airbags, and lane markings are designed to reduce harm, but head-on crashes remain among the most dangerous types of roadway incidents.
