Mower County, MN (March 3, 2026) – A crash on rural roads in Mower County left one person dead and three others injured.

The collision occurred around 1:22 p.m. on Monday, March 2, at the intersection of 610th Avenue and 170th Street. Emergency units responded after reports that a passenger car had struck a northbound pickup truck towing a flatbed trailer.

Authorities said the passenger car was traveling southbound when it collided with the pickup. The car caught fire following the impact. Responders removed a passenger from the burning vehicle, but the person was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver and another passenger in the car sustained major injuries and were transported to the Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin. The pickup truck driver suffered minor injuries.

Weather and road conditions are believed to have been contributing factors in the crash. Authorities continue to investigate the incident, and more details will be released as they become available.

We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased and wish the injured individuals a full recovery.

Why Rural Road Collisions Can Be Especially Hazardous

Rural intersections and roads often present unique challenges for drivers. Limited visibility, higher speeds, and narrow lanes can increase the risk of serious collisions. Weather conditions such as rain, snow, or ice can further reduce traction and reaction time.

Crashes on rural roads may involve vehicles leaving the roadway or colliding head-on, which can produce severe injuries due to the combined speed and force of impact. Fires are another risk, particularly in collisions involving fuel tanks or older vehicles.

Emergency response can also take longer in rural areas, making timely medical care critical for injured occupants. Maintaining safe speeds, allowing extra stopping distance, and staying alert to road and weather conditions are important for reducing risk on these roads.
