Cleveland, TN (March 5, 2026) – A fatal multi-vehicle collision shut down a portion of a major roadway in Cleveland on Wednesday afternoon, leaving one person dead and causing significant traffic disruptions, according to authorities.

The crash occurred shortly after 2:30 p.m. along APD 40 near the interchange with South Lee Highway.

According to the Cleveland Police Department, the accident involved at least two passenger vehicles. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and discovered that one individual had sustained fatal injuries. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities have not released the identity of the deceased as officials work to notify family members.

Due to the severity of the crash, all eastbound lanes of APD 40 were closed for several hours between South Lee Highway and Blue Springs Road. Traffic was diverted onto South Lee Highway while investigators documented the scene, leading to significant delays for drivers during the afternoon commute.

Members of the Cleveland Police Department’s Crash Imaging Section conducted an extensive examination of the scene to gather evidence and reconstruct how the collision occurred. The roadway has since reopened.

The Cleveland Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances that led to the crash.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the individual who lost their life in this tragic accident.

What Makes Multi-Vehicle Collisions on Major Urban Highways So Dangerous?

Multi-vehicle crashes on major roadways such as APD 40 can quickly become severe due to higher traffic volumes and travel speeds. When multiple vehicles are traveling in close proximity, a sudden collision can trigger a chain reaction that involves several drivers within seconds.

High-speed corridors often provide limited time for motorists to react when traffic suddenly slows or when an unexpected hazard appears. Even when only two vehicles initially collide, nearby drivers may have little opportunity to avoid secondary impacts.

Investigators reviewing crashes of this nature typically analyze factors such as vehicle speeds, lane positions, braking patterns, and traffic flow at the time of the incident. Physical evidence from the roadway, vehicle damage patterns, and electronic data recorders can all help reconstruct how the crash unfolded.

Understanding these factors is critical for determining responsibility and for identifying whether road conditions, driver behavior, or other contributing elements played a role in the collision.
