Why Are Stop Sign Violations a Frequent Cause of Intersection Crashes?
Failing to obey a stop sign is one of the most common causes of collisions at rural and suburban intersections. Stop-controlled intersections rely entirely on drivers recognizing the signage and yielding appropriately to cross traffic.
When a driver runs a stop sign, vehicles traveling on the intersecting roadway often have little time to react. Because these drivers typically expect cross traffic to stop, they may be traveling at regular roadway speeds, leaving limited opportunity to brake or avoid a collision.
The resulting crashes can be especially severe when one vehicle strikes the side of another or when the impact force causes a vehicle to overturn or leave the roadway. Vehicles that are pushed into ditches or roll over can increase the risk of injury due to sudden changes in motion and potential roof or side-impact injuries.
Crash investigators evaluating intersection collisions typically examine roadway signage, sight lines, driver statements, and physical evidence such as skid marks or debris patterns. These factors help determine whether a driver failed to stop, misjudged another vehicle’s approach, or encountered other contributing conditions at the intersection.
