How Vehicle Damage Can Help Identify a Hit-and-Run Car
When a driver leaves the scene after striking a pedestrian, vehicle damage is often a key detail in the investigation. The location of dents, broken headlights, or shattered windshield glass can indicate where the impact occurred.
Front-end damage is common in pedestrian crashes because the person is typically struck by the vehicle’s bumper or hood area. Investigators may compare damage patterns with evidence found at the scene, such as plastic fragments or paint chips.
Vehicle model information can also narrow the search. Body shape, grille design, and lighting patterns may help identify the type of car involved.
Surveillance cameras from nearby businesses or intersections may also capture the vehicle before or after the crash, providing additional clues about the driver and the direction of travel.
